Jake Plummer, Co-Founder, UMBO Functional Mushroom Products for Performance Athletes

[Functional Mushrooms for Elite Performance & Deep Healing with former NFL Quarterback, Jake Plummer]

Modern science is only recently beginning to understand the vast treasure trove of healing and adaptogenic capabilities found in the fungal kingdom – or “queendom” as Jake Plummer likes to say – but this is knowledge that traditional folk and indigenous cultures have possessed since time immemorial. Central to this ethnopharmacological knowledge, healing mushrooms like Reishi, Lions Mane, Turkey Tail, Cordyceps, Rhodiola, Chaga, Maitake, and Shitake, among many others, have been known to provide immune-boosting, disease-resisting, cognitive performance enhancing, anti-inflammatory, and other healthful benefits to people for a very long time.

Now, at the convergence of ancient, traditional knowledge and modern science, Jake Plummer and his team at UMBO have formulated a variety of functional-mushroom based drinks, bars, and capsules to aid specifically in both physical exercise and post-exercise recovery. From weightlifting to skiing, and from football to pickleball, the UMBO products are available for people at all levels of performance, elite professionals and weekend warrior amateurs alike. The UMBO products are organized in two major groups: Performance (“Play”) and Recovery (“Pause”), making the user experience an easy and delicious one (podcast host Aaron William Perry is a particular fan of the beverages and bars). But don’t let the easy-to-understand and beautifully-designed packaging fool you – Jake “The Snake” Plummer and his team, including Co-Founders “Suga” Rashad Evans and Del Jolly, have formulated these tasty treats with a science-driven understanding of the peptides, beta-glucans, triterpenes, and antioxidants, and other healthful constituents making these products ideal for high-performance athletes and recreationalists alike. Jake is also exploring the many ways in which these functional mushrooms can help mitigate the devastating effects of traumatic brain injuries (TBIs) and chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) that athletes of several high-impact sports (baseball, basketball, bicycling, boxing, mixed martial arts, American football, and soccer often suffer from. Moreover, several healing mushroom species are also being explored for their mitigation of dementia and Alzheimer’s and other inflammation and aging related diseases.

It is clear that, in the case of these extraordinary fungi (“myco-magicians!”), we’re talking about “much more than a basic pizza topping here,” as Jake puts it. In fact, in addition to the myriad health benefits available from a variety of fungal species, there are also many other uses and benefits made possible by many fungi species, including: bioremediation (metabolizing and detoxifying persistent environmental pollution, including carcinogens and even radioactive waste), myco-materials (materials made from fungus material, often replacing petroleum based polymers), myco-filtration (to purify water), and myco-reforestation to name a few.

About Jake Plummer

Born and raised in Boise, Idaho, where his mother and grandmother often gave him natural remedies like garlic and honey, echinacea and goldenseal, and comfrey poultices, Jake Plummer now resides in Colorado (by way of Tempe Arizona – “Go Devils!”). A quarterback, “Jake the Snake” (so-nicknamed for his slithering, tackle-evading style) played American football for four years at Arizona State University, leading the ASU Devils to within seconds of a national championship his senior year, and was subsequently drafted into the NFL in 1997 by the Arizona Cardinals. Jake played for the Cardinals for six years before finishing his career with a four-year run with the Denver Broncos, leading the “Orange Crush” to the AFC Championship game and earning a spot in the Pro Bowl.

Jake is father to three “amazing little humans,” and is an avid handball and pickleball player, as well as an enthusiastic nature lover. He is an advocate and proponent of holistic and natural health, and previously worked with the medicinal Cannabis company Charlottes Web to help educate and advocate for hemp as a way to improve health and wellness before launching UMBO. Now, as a co-founder of UMBO Functional Mushroom Company and co-founder of Mycolove Farm, he is immersed in the growing, extracting, and advocating for the healing benefits of legal, non-psychedelic mushrooms.

Given the discussion of functional and medicinal mushrooms in this content, especially the nutritive and healing qualities associated with certain mushroom species, and although it’s widely understood that virtually every traditional culture in the world uses nutritious and healing mushrooms and this information can be understood historically, anthropologically, and ethnopharmacologically, both the federal government and (therefore) prudence require us to say the following in order to remain compliant legally:
