Episode 175 – Brigitte Mars & Ron Lemire – Holistic Healing Renaissance in Boulder, CO – a 50 Year Retrospective
The Holistic Health Renaissance in Boulder, Colorado – a 50 Year Retrospective
Why has organic food become so widespread (albeit still not ubiquitous, as it was through all of human history up until about 100 years ago)? Why is herbal medicine now practiced by so many families throughout modern economies? Why has the so-called Lifestyles of Health and Sustainability (LOHAS) market segment grown to a $500 billion+ industry, annually? Believe it or not, Boulder, Colorado, the home of Mork and Mindy, is central to this story.
In this special live-audience podcast episode, recorded at The Riverside – Boulder, our friends and podcast alumni Brigitte Mars and Ron Lemire reflect upon 50+ years in the holistic health and wellness movement centered here in Colorado, especially in Boulder, a unique community nestled along with foothills and Flatiron Mountains. Rooted in the east-west fusion of the mid-twentieth century, and a key node in the great awakening of that same era, Boulder is a fertile melting pot of entrepreneurs, holistic healers, and spiritual luminaries looking well beyond the wonder-bread culture of mid-twentieth century industrial materialism.
After humanist Dr. Albert Schweitzer keynoted the Goethe Festival in Aspen in 1949, after Buckminster Fuller inspired the world with his sustainable technologies, and after John Denver serenaded the world with his “Rocky Mountain High,” a great convergence occurred: a fusion of Buddhist, Christian, Pagan, Jewish, academic, macrobiotic, herbalist, naturalist, holistic (massage therapy, Rolfing, Yoga, homeopathy, spagyrics, Feldenkreis, acupuncture) modalities, and hundreds of natural and organic food companies sprouted here. The rest, as they say, is history… and despite some of the head winds we’re experiencing (culturally, politically, technologically, and economically), “it’s [still] happening!”
Enjoy this historic retrospective, told by two great elders of our time, and learn about the many giants upon whose shoulders we now stand as we continue the great work of restoring health, balance, nature-connection, and grounded, detoxified life-ways to our communities and our planet.

About Ron & Brigitte
Ron Lemire is a graduate of Maine Maritime Academy and became a Marine Engineer. He then worked out at sea for a few years on oil tankers, mud boats and seismograph boats covering all aspects of oil development from searching for oil fields to drilling for oil by delivering mud to the rigs and transporting oil on tankers. Sometimes he didn’t see land for six months! After becoming disenchanted with the oil industry he wanted a change, and drove to Boulder, Colorado. While heading west, as the Rocky Mountains appeared in the distance, John Denver’s famous song, “Rocky Mountain High” was playing on the radio. After years of deep study in Rolfing, Moshe Feldenkrais, Science of Centering, and Body Centered Psychotherapy, Ron received an invitation to Aspen to provide a healing session to an anonymous client – – whom he would soon discover was John Denver. This set his life on a new trajectory, including spending most of the 1980s traveling with John Denver. Never returning to the sea to work, but deepening in his commitment to body healing, Ron would incorporate his experiences and body-centric knowledge into developing the Liquid Trainer “Aquarian technology”
